in his book about Magellan. This is quite true as the first round-the-world voyage of the Europeans
– the expedition of Magellan – was paid with spices. The great navigator equipped his little fleet
using the money borrowed from the financiers on the word of honour to pay back the debt with spices.
Having set out on his journey Magellan would never again step on the European soil, he died on one
of the islands of the Philippine Archipelago but he kept his promise. His ship Victoria brought to
Spain fragrant gifts from the distant countries – pepper, cloves and, of course, ginger. The money
received from the sale of spices was more than enough to compensate for all round the world voyage
expenses. The medieval Europe was fascinated with spices - no other product was in such a demand
as spices. Exotic, hot, exciting oriental valuables cast a spell on the people of the Old World. The
meal was thought to be well-cooked only if it was strongly peppered and seasoned with cloves. And
ginger was almost in everything that was served – ginger sauce, ginger meat, ginger bread and ginger
spice-cakes, ginger drinks. Europeans had not yet discovered tea. Ginger brews, infusions and
liqueurs at that time occupied the place of tea. The Chinese novelty, ginger had tempting bright
aroma and wonderfully warmed up. “Hot as ginger”, Shakespear said by the words of Henry the
V. One can say that today we experience the second advent of ginger – ginger candid fruits,
ginger marmalade, candied ginger and pickled ginger and, of course, ginger drinks. Greenfield Ginger
Red, wonderful fruit tea with ginger aroma is produced of hibiscus, hips, dried apples. Rich and
bright Greenfield Ginger Red does not contain caffeine, wonderfully quenches thirst and has strong
warming effect.
